Green roofs are Germany's most popular eco home feature and growing fast in the USA. Here is how to create one on any structure — from a garden shed upwards.

Germany has more green roof area per capita than any other country — around 90 million square metres across commercial and residential buildings. Dachbegrünung is standard practice and legally required on new flat-roofed commercial buildings in many German cities. In the USA, New York, Chicago, Portland, and Denver have adopted similar incentives.
Types of Green Roofs
Extensive green roof — thin substrate (5–15cm), planted with sedums, mosses, and wildflowers. Low maintenance, low weight (60–200 kg/m²). Most practical type for sheds and garages. Semi-intensive — medium depth (15–25cm), wider plant palette. Intensive (roof garden) — deep substrate (25cm+), supports full planting including shrubs. Requires structural engineering assessment.

1. Ensure roof can support 100–200 kg/m². 2. Apply waterproof EPDM rubber membrane. 3. Install drainage layer (30–50mm lightweight aggregate). 4. Add filter fabric. 5. Apply green roof substrate 5–10cm deep. 6. Plant sedum plug plants at 6 per m², or apply sedum matting for fastest establishment. A green roof retains 50–90% of rainfall, provides natural habitat, and insulates the building beneath (reducing energy use by 10–20%).
