Heat Pump vs Gas Boiler: Which Is Better for Your Home in 2025?

Feb 28, 2025 · 8 min · Intermediate

The heat pump vs gas boiler question is the most searched energy topic in Germany and increasingly so in the USA. Here is the honest comparison for homeowners.

Germany’s Most Searched Energy Topic

In Germany, ‘Wärmepumpe’ (heat pump) was the most searched home energy topic of 2024 and 2025, driven by the Gebäudeenergiegesetz (Buildings Energy Act). In the USA, the Inflation Reduction Act’s federal tax credits for heat pumps (up to $2,000) have dramatically accelerated adoption.

How Heat Pumps Work

An air source heat pump extracts heat from outdoor air (even at -20°C) and transfers it indoors. For every 1 unit of electrical energy consumed, it produces 2.5–4 units of heat energy (COP 2.5–4.0). This efficiency means heat pumps are often cheaper to run than gas, particularly as electricity grids decarbonise.

Key Question: A heat pump’s running cost advantage depends on the electricity-to-gas price ratio. At a ratio below 2.5:1, heat pumps typically run cheaper. Germany currently has ~3.5:1 ratio — careful sizing and installation is critical to cost competitiveness.

When Heat Pumps Work Best

Heat pumps perform most efficiently heating to relatively low temperatures (40–45°C flow temperature). This pairs well with: underfloor heating (designed for 35–40°C), oversized radiators, or newer radiator systems. In older homes with standard radiators designed for 70–80°C, radiator upgrades may be needed for optimal performance.
