How to Grow Strawberries at Home: Containers, Beds and Gardens

Feb 14, 2025 ยท 6 min ยท Beginner

Strawberries are the most popular fruit to grow at home in both the USA and Germany. Here is how to get a prolific harvest from pots, beds, or open ground.

The Most Popular Home Fruit

Strawberries consistently rank as the #1 fruit gardeners want to grow at home in both the United States and Germany (where Erdbeere growing is a cherished tradition). They’re compact enough for balcony pots, produce fruit within the first season, and homegrown strawberries taste dramatically superior to any supermarket version.

Choosing Your Varieties

June-bearing โ€” large crop in June/July. Best for preserves. Varieties: ‘Honeoye’ (USA favourite), ‘Elsanta’ (German standard). Everbearing โ€” smaller harvests from June to frost. Best for fresh eating. Varieties: ‘Seascape’, ‘Albion’ (USA); ‘Ostara’, ‘Mieze Schindler’ (Germany’s prized heirloom).

Germany’s Prize: ‘Mieze Schindler’ is considered by many to be the world’s finest-flavoured strawberry โ€” intensely aromatic with a complex sweetness. It requires a pollinator variety nearby but is absolutely worth the planning.

Growing in Containers

Use terracotta strawberry planters, hanging baskets, or any container at least 20cm deep with drainage holes. Fill with potting compost mixed with slow-release fertiliser. Plant so the crown is at soil level. Feed weekly with liquid tomato fertiliser once flowers appear.

Pest Protection

Net against birds โ€” they will take every berry otherwise. Place straw under developing fruits to keep them clean. After fruiting, cut foliage back to 10cm to encourage strong growth next year. Runner plants can be pegged into small pots to create new free plants.
