Best Paint Colours for Living Rooms: A Complete Guide
Choosing paint colour is the most impactful and most anxiety-inducing home decision. Here's how to choose the right colour every time, for any room.
Understanding Undertones
Most paint colour mistakes come from ignoring undertones. Every ‘white’ has an undertone โ blue, grey, pink, yellow, or green โ that becomes visible once on a large surface. Before choosing any colour, understand your room’s natural light quality (warm south/west light vs. cool north/east light) and choose undertones accordingly.
Warm vs. Cool Light Rooms
In north or east-facing rooms with cooler light, warm-toned colours (creams, warm greys, terracottas) prevent the room from feeling cold. In south or west-facing rooms with warm light, you have more latitude โ cool blues, soft greens, and crisp whites work beautifully.
Top Living Room Colours
Farrow & Ball ‘All White’ โ warm, creamy white. Looks rich in warm light. Dulux ‘Pebble Shore’ โ a warm grey-beige that works in any room. F&B ‘Mole’s Breath’ โ deep grey with warm brown undertone. Sophisticated and cozy. F&B ‘Dix Blue’ โ a mid grey-blue. Timeless and versatile. F&B ‘Green Smoke’ โ muted, slightly grey green. The most popular earthy green. Dulux ‘Sapphire Salute’ โ deep navy. Particularly impactful on one statement wall.
Ceiling Colour
White ceilings are default โ but they’re not always right. In a room with strong wall colour, a slightly tinted ceiling (5% concentration of the wall colour) looks more considered. In a low-ceilinged room, the same colour on ceiling and walls removes the visual ‘lid’ and makes the space feel taller.
Finish Matters
Matt finishes are the most desirable for walls โ they absorb light beautifully and hide imperfections. Eggshell or satin for woodwork โ durable and wipeable. Never use standard matt on woodwork โ it marks badly and can’t be cleaned effectively.
