10 Indoor Plants That Purify Air and Look Stunning
These air-purifying houseplants are scientifically proven to improve air quality while adding beauty to any room. Best picks for every light level.
Science Behind Air-Purifying Plants
NASA’s Clean Air Study identified a range of common houseplants that remove toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from indoor air. While you’d need a lot of plants to equal an air purifier, the combined effect of multiple plants in a room makes a measurable difference โ plus, they’re beautiful.
1. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
One of the top air purifiers, the peace lily removes five major air pollutants including ammonia and benzene. It thrives in low light, droops dramatically when thirsty (making watering schedule easy to read), and produces elegant white blooms. Water when the top soil is dry; feed monthly.
2. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
Nearly indestructible and one of the best air purifiers available. The snake plant converts COโ to oxygen even at night (most plants only do this in daylight), making it an excellent bedroom plant. Water every 2โ6 weeks โ it genuinely thrives on neglect.
3. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Fast-growing, trailing, and incredibly adaptable. Pothos tolerates low light, infrequent watering, and the neglect most houseplants would die from. It comes in dozens of varieties from bright neon green to marbled white and green. Train it to trail from shelves or climb a moss pole.
4. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
Excellent for removing formaldehyde and xylene from the air. Spider plants are non-toxic to pets, very easy to propagate (the hanging ‘spiderettes’ root in water), and tolerate a wide range of conditions. A perfect plant for beginner gardeners.
5. Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica)
Bold, architectural, and a strong air purifier. Rubber plants like bright indirect light and can grow into genuine statement trees over time. Water when the top 2cm of soil is dry; wipe leaves monthly to remove dust and keep them photosynthesising efficiently.
6โ10: More Air Purifiers to Try
Boston Fern โ best for adding humidity in dry rooms. Aloe Vera โ purifies and has practical uses too. English Ivy โ particularly effective against airborne mould. Chinese Evergreen โ one of the most adaptable low-light purifiers. ZZ Plant โ near-zero maintenance with deep glossy leaves.
Placement Tips
For maximum air quality benefit, aim for one medium-sized plant per 10 square metres of floor space. Group plants together โ they create a microclimate of higher humidity that benefits all of them. Keep foliage dust-free with a monthly wipe for peak photosynthesis.
