Why Install a Smart Thermostat?

Smart thermostat installation is the most-recommended energy efficiency upgrade in both the USA and Germany. The average household saves 10โ€“25% on heating and cooling bills. At current energy prices, most thermostats pay back their cost within 12โ€“18 months.

Before You Start: Compatibility Check

Check your system type: Central forced air (most US homes) โ€” compatible with most smart thermostats. Heat pump systems โ€” require heat pump-specific settings (Ecobee and Nest both offer compatible models). Boiler systems (most European homes including Germany) โ€” require OpenTherm-compatible thermostats (Nest E, Hive, Bosch EasyControl, tado).

C-Wire Check: Most smart thermostats require a common wire (C-wire) for continuous power. If no C-wire is present, choose a thermostat with a C-wire adapter (Ecobee includes one) or have an HVAC technician add one.

Installation Steps

1. Turn off power at circuit breaker. 2. Photograph existing wiring. 3. Remove old thermostat. 4. Mount new base plate and feed wires through. 5. Connect wires per the wiring guide using your photographs. 6. Attach thermostat to base plate. 7. Restore power and follow in-device setup. 8. Download app and connect to WiFi.
